I Have Had It With Microsoft Windows

Yes. You had read it right. I have had it with Microsoft Windows. Maybe a bit harsh? Not really. Let me try to explain this.

To Make Things Clear

To make the situation a bit clear, I will share what computer I am using.

My computer (PC) is already more than 13 years old. But still working fine. But of course, a bit slow. It is a Packard Bell, with an i3 processor and 10Gb of memory. The storage is 1 Harddisk of around 750 GB, which I have divided into three portions of each 250 GB. At the time, that was enough for me. Next to that, I connected an external USB drive of 1.2Gb.

Over time, the computer was getting slow, but it was okay. The most important thing was, that it was working. The bootup time is a bit long, like around 30 minutes, before I am ready to use it. So, I don’t turn off the computer to save time. Only when needed or when things get really slow, I will do a reboot.

About two years ago, I restarted an old hobby of mine. Building plastic scale models. When I am building these models, I will take photos and share them on my other website. When the mode is finished, I will create a video of all the photos and place that on my Youtube channel. To create the videos, I am using Da Vince Resolve. The free version. At first, I was okay with how long it took to generate the video. But slowly on I was thinking that maybe it was time to look for a new computer. Something faster. Things were placed on hold due to my health condition.

The Real Reason

Also, many times I was informed that it also was time to upgrade to Windows 11. My current computer is running on Windows 10. But as maybe you know, to upgrade to Windows 11, the hardware must meet some specifications. My computer is too old to meet these. So, that was also one reason to look for a newer computer.

I am already using Windows since the beginning of Windows. I worked with almost every version. I think I skipped maybe one or two. Anyway, I don’t know better than how to use Windows. With every new version, it takes a little bit of time to find out where everything is hiding, but I have managed.

The thing that since the last few versions started to annoy me, was that I was “forced” to install the latest updates. In the evening all the latest updates were downloaded and in the morning I always saw the message that I had to reboot the computer so the updates would be installed. I always tried to delay that. I know that there is a small change and that the update could break the software. And normally you will read about this in the next few days.

This Is why I delay things and see how the rest world is. But because the update is downloaded automatically, if I don’t reboot my computer, it will reboot itself after a few days. I cannot do anything about this. Why is this? It is my computer and I want to install or update software when I think it is a good time. NOT WHEN MICROSOFT THINKS ITS A GOOD TIME. Maybe I want to skip an update. Or maybe I don’t want to install it at all.

It is my decision. NOT THEIRS.

Windows 11

Now we are being forced to update to Windows 11. The support of Windows 10 will stop in 2025. But right now you can PAY Microsoft to extend some time. Yes. You can pay them to get some extra time. Why? It is my computer. I do with it what I want. Not you.

To install Windows 11, the hardware needs to have certain specifications. If this does not meet these specifications, you cannot install Windows 11. So right now, I am FORCED to buy a new computer, else I cannot use it anymore. Who are you to demand from me what I need to do?

Lately, I also read a lot on the internet, that Windows 11 is also having many problems after each update. What are they doing there? I was always told, that I needed to test the software before I sent it into the world. But it looks like Microsoft doesn’t need to follow this. It looks like they just do what they feel like doing.

A few weeks ago, my computer also downloaded the latest update. (Without me wanting that.) So I just left it and did not reboot my computer. After a few days, in the middle of the night, my computer suddenly did a reboot. I just left it. When the next morning I wanted to wake up the computer from sleep mode, it did not do anything. It stayed there. I was forced to power down the computer and let it start up again. This is when things went wrong.

Trying To Get My Computer to Work Again

No matter how I started the computer, I kept getting the messages, that it was trying to automatically recover or repair some files and boot again. No matter how many times it rebooted, it did not fix the problem. I tried Safe mode with and without a Network connection. I removed the latest updates, but nothing was working. Finally, after the whole day trying so many different things, I did a recovery from the latest recovery point. This also took a very long time.

The next day I was able to use my computer again.

So many frustrations. That was the thing that made me make up my mind and decide that this was the last time. This was not the first time this had happened to me.

And now?

But what else can I do? I have worked with Microsoft Windows since the very beginning. What else is there? Well, there is Linux. I had tried this several times but was not really fond of it.

The other thing that is left, is iOS from Apple. I know from the past that this was not always easy to get used to. So I asked people around me, who are using iOS, what they thought of it. Everyone was very positive about it. My son let me have a go on his Macbook Air, to see how that is. And to be honest, it looked okay.

I had read more about it and the more I read or see, the more I made up my mind to step away from Windows and transfer to iOS.

So, What Will It Be

At this moment, Apple is releasing the new Mac mini M4. I watched several video reviews and read several articles, and I have decided to switch to that.

Apple products are not cheap, but I think the new Mac mini M4 is worth the money. I can update when I want. It looks like the hardware is also lasting longer. There is enough software that you can compare with Microsoft. It looks like that with Apple, I am more in control of what I want to do.

Closing

It will be a big step for me, to switch to the Mac mini M4, but I think it will be worth the money and time.

As my son said, it is almost like switching mobile phones. It takes time to get used to the new phone, but if you get stuck, right now on the internet you can find all the answers to your questions. I also saw a review of the Mac mini M4, using Da Vince Resolve and the one that was reviewed was very enthusiastic about the overall performance. So, one more reason to get the new Mac mini M4

I am looking around to see if Apple has some special Black Friday offers, but on the website, it says that they have, but not for the new M4.

That’s a pity, but that is what it is. I am not sure when I will get the Mac mini, yet.

I will place my thoughts and experience with this new Mac mini here on this site. So keep an eye on the coming posts.
